About Our Client

MediaJustice (formerly Center for Media Justice) is building a powerful grassroots movement for a more just and participatory media —fighting for racial, economic, and gender justice in a digital age. MediaJustice boldly advances communication rights, access, and power for communities harmed by persistent dehumanization, discrimination and disadvantage. Home of the MediaJustice Network, they envision a future where everyone has sustained and universal access to open and democratic media and technology platforms.

MediaJustice’s “Unshackling Freedom” microsite is a resource for folks to challenge electronic monitoring (EM). ⁣

While EM is marketed as an “evidence-based” alternative to incarceration, it’s an alternative form of incarceration and surveillance. It restricts an individual’s liberty, limits their privacy, disrupts family relationships, and may jeopardize their financial security. In addition, the devices may cause physical harm or be traumatizing to those forced to wear them.

MediaJustice (formerly Center for Media Justice) is building a powerful grassroots movement for a more just and participatory media —fighting for racial, economic, and gender justice in a digital age. Launched in 2009 by Malkia Devich Cyril, Amy Sonnie, and Jen Soriano — MediaJustice boldly advances communication rights, access, and power for communities harmed by persistent dehumanization, discrimination and disadvantage. Home of the MediaJustice Network, MediaJustice envisions a future where everyone has sustained and universal access to open and democratic media and technology platforms.

In 2022 Design Action Collective worked with MediaJustice to launch the Unshackling Freedom Toolkit, a digital home for all the resources needed to successfully start a campaign to ban or block Electronic Monitoring in your community.
